Millsmont
I spent the morning with this warm and welcoming community and met some kind and open neighbors. Families, individuals, long-times residents, new transplants, and the Get Goes Mobile Cafe all contributed to a festive atmosphere. And what they say about the views from Millsmont is no joke. You really should check them out.
6 years ago I moved to Oakland — from Marin. At first I never came out of my house — except for work…
Then I met Emily Odza and started to be part of the Oakland family and the diverse community of ‘Millsmont’ via nextdoor.com. Now I wouldn’t live in Marin if you paid me!
What I like about Maxwell Park
• The ethnic diversity
• The gorgeous weather
• The incredible views of Oakland and SF
• Mills College is only a few blocks away
• Near the middle of Oakland — close to everything
• Friendly, enthusiastic people who care
• A neighborhood on the verge of blossoming into something very special!
I love Millsmont! Best views of S.F.!
Born in Oakland
30 years bi-coastal
30 years in Oakland…
Our community first came together around group walks. Living in my mother’s old house and making it mine + making this ‘hood mine over past 15 years. Created little free library and coffee @ the curb. We need parks, stores + cafe to walk to!
When you say Oakland, you need to say where. A widely diverse area of many cultures and peoples. It ranges from the affluent to the destitute. I’ve lived in my house for 47 years and often I wish I was somewhere else. However, I raised my family here and supported the city during that time. Once the area was pretty much working class, but not so much anymore. We are like America — a melting pot.
We used to watch deer playing above the freeway. Dynamite from the rock quarry was a daily occurrence. They eventually made them stop due to toppled chimneys. We would hear the blasts and go outside to watch for the dust columns. A different time — same place.
We love our neighborhood, a hidden gem
